Prince’s Mead School celebrated their 75th year anniversary in 2024. Founded in 1949 by Crystal Holme, the school was originally established in her home, and has expanded, moved and developed over the years into the illustrious nursery, pre-prep and prep school it is today. Prince’s Mead has always been known for its family ethos and holistic education, so as they started to get ready to celebrate their heritage and history, Prince’s Mead also made the decision to update their uniform with Schoolblazer.
Prince’s Mead had two priorities; modernising their current uniform and streamlining the uniform list. Items that no longer have a place at a modern school were removed, to ensure nothing superfluous remained. In quite a bold move, ties were removed completely, for both girls and boys, and their uniforms were combined. The end result is a cohesive range of garments that focus on quality and value over quantity.
When The Schoolblazer Team first visited Prince’s Mead in 2023, the only way to purchase uniform was arranging an appointment with the supplier in person at the school. It was felt that this was time-consuming and inconvenient for the parents and, understanding the modern parent, they were more than happy to move entirely online to make shopping straightforward for them. Due to Schoolblazer’s stock guarantee and excellent customer service, this transition was smooth and efficient. They will also be moving to Limitless, Schoolblazer’s sportswear brand, for sportswear in2025 too, and so parents will be provided with an unapparelled one-stop-shop service.
Previously, the girls’ and boys’ uniforms were entirely different from each other, with the girls in red and the boys in royal blue. In order to modernise the uniform to create a more cohesive appearance, with fewer items overall, the colours were merged, and Schoolblazer crafted a lovely, bespoke, checked shirt in red and navy. The school chose navy knitwear with a red trim, and a red 100% wool blazer for both girls and boys to wear, with navy bottom halves. The result isa striking red and navy uniform that bridges the gap between genders and promotes pride and distinction from other school uniforms.
With a strong heritage spanning 75 years, Prince’s Mead has always balanced tradition with innovation. The decision to modernise the uniform was not just about aesthetics but about reflecting the school’s ethos and evolving identity. As Head at Prince’s Mead, Adam King, explains:
“Prince’s Mead has always been a school that embraces tradition while looking to the future. Modernising our uniform was a natural step in ensuring that our pupils feel both comfortable and proud in what they wear. The new design reflects our values of inclusivity while maintaining the heritage that makes Prince’s Mead so special.”
The Schoolblazer Team is delighted with the outcome for Prince’s Mead. You can find out more about Prince’s Mead, a co-educational independent nursery and school for children aged 3 to 11 in Winchester, on their website www.princesmeadschool.org.uk.
